Brief History of Max Engel & Co LLP
Max D Engel qualified in 1938 having achieved Honours in the
final Law Society exams. He set up a practice by himself in Holborn,
London but within 12 months volunteered for service in the RAF
in the Second World War.
During the War his wife and first child were evacuated to Northampton
and on visits to them, Max Engel struck up a friendship with a
local solicitor. He was invited to join him after the war and
established his own practice in Northampton in 1949.
Although he originally opened an office just off of the Market
Square, he was the first solicitor to move right away from the
area of the Market Square and after a short stay in St Giles Street
moved to Hazelwood Road where the offices are still situated.
Neighbouring premises were purchased during the 1970s and car
parking (with client spaces) was added in the 1980s.
Richard Engel, son of the founder, joined the firm as a trainee
in 1967 and qualified in 1970. He became Senior Partner in 1980
- a post which he still holds.
The founder Max Engel died in 2005 aged 93 having held a practising
certificate for 66 years, one of the longest serving solicitors
in the U.K.
Despite changes in personnel the firm still stands by its original
principles of providing a first class service, based on a thorough
knowledge of the law and a commitment to the client which is second
to none.
From the days that Max Engel made his name in Northampton by
fighting for the underdog in several high profile Court cases
in the 1950s to the well respected commercial, property and private
client specialisations of the 21st Century, the message is still
the same - “we’re on your side”.
